It prevents tumor lysis syndrome, a dangerous condition where the breakdown of cancer cells floods the bloodstream with uric acid and other cellular contents, which can overwhelm and damage the kidneys. The active drug, rasburicase, is an enzyme produced from genetically modified yeast. It works by rapidly converting uric acid into a more soluble substance that the body can eliminate more easily. Treatment involves a daily 30-minute intravenous infusion for five days, typically before chemotherapy begins, with a standard, non-varying dose.
What side effects are associated with Elitek?

Other frequently reported side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, headache, fever, sore throat, mouth sores, and swelling.
