Frequently asked questions

What's the cash price for Dantrolene Sodium (Dantrium) in the US?

Our most recent US pharmacy data shows a low of roughly $35.40 for Dantrolene Sodium with a standard discount card. That figure moves with dosage and quantity — check the comparison table for the exact combination you need.

Is Dantrolene Sodium (Dantrium) available through Cost Plus Drugs?

Yes — Cost Plus Drugs lists Dantrolene Sodium at roughly $0.195 per unit, a published price with no membership card or coupon involved. See the three-price comparison above for how that stacks up against discount-card pharmacies.

What do Canadian pharmacies charge for Dantrolene Sodium (Dantrium)?

We found Canadian pricing for Dantrolene Sodium starting near $0.950 per tablet in USD terms. That's before any shipping charge, which the table above breaks out separately.

Why is Dantrolene Sodium (Dantrium) priced differently in the US and Canada?

Drug pricing is set separately in each country through different negotiation, regulatory, and distribution systems, so the same medication can legitimately carry different price tags on either side of the border. In this case, our data shows the US price is actually the lower of the two once a program like Cost Plus Drugs is factored in — the assumption that Canada is always cheaper doesn't hold for every drug.

Is Dantrium covered by Medicare, and what are the associated costs?

Brand-name Dantrium is typically not covered under Medicare Part D or Medicare Advantage prescription drug plans, though generic dantrolene sodium usually is. However, Dantrium injections administered in a hospital are often covered under Medicare Part B as part of a medical procedure. Patients can inquire at the hospital about using prescription discount programs to help reduce any out-of-pocket expenses.

Is a generic version of Dantrium available?

Yes. Dantrium is the brand name for the drug dantrolene sodium. Generic dantrolene sodium is manufactured by several companies, including Amneal, Lannett, and Par. For more information on generic availability and potential cost savings, you can search for 'dantrolene sodium' on various prescription discount websites or consult with your pharmacist.

What is Dantrium and what condition does it treat?

Dantrium is a brand-name prescription muscle relaxant used to treat and prevent malignant hyperthermia (MH), a rare, inherited, life-threatening condition. MH can be triggered in susceptible individuals by certain inhaled anesthetics or the muscle relaxant succinylcholine. During an episode, muscles rapidly contract and and release heat, leading to dangerously high body temperature, muscle breakdown, acidified blood, and, if untreated, organ failure and death. The active ingredient, dantrolene sodium, works by preventing calcium release in muscle cells, relaxing the muscles. Treatment involves immediate intravenous infusion, followed by several days of oral capsules. With prompt dantrolene treatment, the mortality rate for MH drops to around 5%. Dantrium is also used off-label for Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome, a similar reaction to some antipsychotic medications. For patients known to be MH-susceptible, the standard preventive approach is to use non-triggering anesthetics, though Dantrium capsules may sometimes be prescribed preoperatively.
