Estring is a brand-name medication, and there is currently no FDA-approved generic equivalent on the market.
What is Estring and how is it used?
Estring is an FDA-approved vaginal ring that releases a low, steady dose of estradiol, a form of estrogen, directly into vaginal tissues. It is used to treat symptoms of vulvar and vaginal atrophy due to menopause, such as dryness, irritation, and burning, as well as related urinary symptoms like painful or frequent urination. The ring is inserted high into the vagina with clean, dry hands and is designed to remain in place for 90 days. When positioned correctly, it should not be felt during daily activities or intercourse. If it is felt or begins to slip out, it can be gently pushed back into place or rinsed with warm water and reinserted. After three months, the ring is removed by hooking a finger through it and pulling gently. Used rings should be disposed of in the trash, not flushed. Estring is intended for 90-day use cycles. Always follow your healthcare provider's specific instructions and consult them if you have difficulty with insertion or removal.
