What is Pegasys?
Pegasys (peginterferon alfa-2a) is a prescription injectable medication used to treat chronic infections with hepatitis B or hepatitis C viruses, often in combination with other antiviral drugs. These viral infections cause progressive liver damage, including cirrhosis. Pegasys works by mimicking the body's natural interferons, which help make cells resistant to viral infection and boost the immune system's ability to combat the virus. It is administered as a subcutaneous injection once weekly. While often given by a healthcare provider, patients may also self-administer the medication using a pre-filled pen injector called the Pegasys ProClick.
