What is Praluent and what is it used for?
Praluent is an injectable prescription drug containing alirocumab, a PCSK9 inhibitor monoclonal antibody. It works by helping the liver remove LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream. It is FDA-approved to lower the risk of heart attack, stroke, and certain types of chest pain in adults with cardiovascular disease. It is also used, alongside diet and other cholesterol medications, to treat primary hyperlipidemia (including hereditary high cholesterol) and, in combination with other drugs, to treat homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. Praluent is not approved for use in children under 18. It should not be used by anyone allergic to alirocumab. Before starting treatment, inform your doctor of all your medical conditions, other medications (including supplements), and if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as the drug's effects on a fetus are not fully understood.
