What is Stivarga?
Stivarga (regorafenib) is an oral chemotherapy medication prescribed for advanced cancers. It is approved to treat metastatic colorectal cancer, gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which is the most common type of liver cancer. As a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, Stivarga works by blocking specific proteins that signal cancer cells to grow and divide. Treatment typically involves a 28-day cycle: one capsule daily for 21 days, followed by a 7-day break. This cycle continues as long as the treatment remains effective and well-tolerated.
What are the side effects of Stivarga?
Stivarga can cause various side effects. Common ones include fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite, weight loss, abdominal pain, diarrhea, mouth sores, and hand-foot skin reaction (characterized by pain, redness, blistering, or peeling on the palms and soles). More serious but less common side effects require immediate medical attention. These include severe liver damage, gastrointestinal perforation (a hole in the stomach or intestines), heart problems (such as heart attack), severe bleeding, dangerously high blood pressure, and serious infections. Although rare, allergic reactions can occur. Patients should promptly contact their doctor if they experience symptoms like fever, sore throat, swelling, itching, or rash.
