What is Zejula?
Zejula (niraparib) is a prescription medication used as a maintenance treatment to help prevent the recurrence of specific cancers, including ovarian, fallopian tube, and primary peritoneal cancer. It belongs to a class of drugs called PARP (poly ADP-ribose polymerase) inhibitors. These targeted therapies work by blocking an enzyme (PARP) that cancer cells use to repair their DNA, leading to cell death and slowing tumor growth. Zejula is typically prescribed for patients whose cancer has responded to initial platinum-based chemotherapy. Due to the risk of birth defects, Zejula is contraindicated during pregnancy. Effective contraception is required during treatment and for at least six months after the final dose. Breastfeeding is not recommended while taking this medication.
